Advantage+ is Meta's AI-driven campaign type, and it's surrounded by both hype and scepticism. Meta promotes it as the future of advertising. Sceptics see it as a black box that gives Meta more control over your budget. As always, the truth lies in the middle and depends heavily on your situation.
What is Advantage+?
Advantage+ is an umbrella name for a range of AI-driven features in Meta Ads Manager. The two most relevant are:
- Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns (ASC): Meta's AI campaign type for e-commerce that combines prospecting and retargeting in one campaign. Meta decides almost everything: audience, placement, budget allocation.
- Advantage+ Audience: Meta automatically expands your manually set audience to people the algorithm considers more promising. You give a suggestion, but Meta ultimately decides for itself.
When does Advantage+ work well?
Advantage+ performs best when the conditions are right. In practice we see good results when:
- The daily budget is high enough for the algorithm to learn quickly - roughly €50–€100 per day as a minimum guideline for ASC
- The account already has enough historical conversion data (hundreds of purchases in the past 90 days)
- The creative is strong and varied - Advantage+ chooses which creative works best, but it can only choose from what you supply
- The product has broad appeal and doesn't depend on very specific demographic targeting
When doesn't Advantage+ work
Advantage+ is not a universal solution. It performs poorly when:
- The budget is too low: without enough conversion data the algorithm doesn't learn and wastes budget on trial and error
- The audience needs to be tightly defined: if you need hard geographic, age or demographic exclusions, Advantage+ struggles with that
- Margins vary significantly per product: Meta optimises for conversions, not margin per product. A cheap product with a high conversion rate beats a more expensive product with a higher margin, unless you actively steer for it
- The account is still in its start-up phase: Advantage+ needs historical data. A new account with no tracking history gives the algorithm nothing to build on
The honest conclusion
Advantage+ is a tool, not a strategy. It works well when the foundation is right: sufficient budget, strong creative, good tracking data and a broad product. If you switch it on without that foundation, you're giving Meta more control over an account that hasn't earned that control yet.
Many advertisers switch on Advantage+ hoping it will solve their problems, and discover it delivers the same results as before, but with less insight into what's actually happening. The real gain lies in the combination: a well-structured account with Advantage+ built on top of it, not as a replacement for structure.
